Jon Rettinger Has A Nice Video Review Of The “iPad” On His Site TechnoBuffalo.com

For those that read my blog… you probably know that I have been a fan of John Rettinger at TechnoBuffalo.com.  He has a great iPad Review on his site.  I recommend you take the time to watch it.  I saw a comment that he is long winded… but I think that is part of his charm.  He is thorough… and does a great service to those who frequent his site.

I cannot wait for my 3G iPad.  I am not trying to brag about buying one… I just want to express what is going on in my mind.  As a computer engineer (as any engineer would) I know that before you can search out the utility of any device, you have to know what your requirements for the device are. Engineers live and die by the requirements they derive and strive to manage them during the life of a project. While I see a lot of people…getting an iPad…then trying to figure out what they need it for, I thought long and hard… and basically I want my iPad for content viewing where my first generation iPhone just won’t cut it. This is why I had to wait for the 3G unit and am not basking in iPad Heaven (at least heaven for some… as they party might not yet be over). I have an archaic Compaq TC1000 with windows XP tablet PC edition… and the concept of “content on the go” was never quite there. In spite of 80211.b networking, it was cumbersome to use the stylus to go through many layers and menus and the processor was not up to the job (especially on XP SP3). For me… Content when I want it…be it e-mail, YouTube, or Facebook, or posting a blog entry, etc. I want to do it when I want to do it… not when my computer infrastructure is available within an arm’s reach.

I cannot wait to toss in my 2 cents on the iPad… although by the time my opportunity comes… it will be old hat… and like so many people or things in modern culture… its 15 minutes of Warholian Fame… will have expired.

  1. I too am using the older iPhone biting my lip not to get the 3GS. I got the wife one, but it was due to timing. She switched carriers and needed a new phone. There is a slight performance increase, but not enough to warrant spending a few hundred bucks for me to have the latest and gratest. I am patiently awaiting the next gen iPhone. I am also looking forward to YOUR first hand review of the ipad. I am on the fence. I don’t see it as a travel companion for me, but as a shared device for the family. A quick look at a recipe, family calender, email, etc… I might have to call you after you’ve had it in your hands for a while. Let me know…

  2. No problem. I am not addicted to the web… (sure I am not! LOL) but I do Blog (obviously), maintain my domain (TheMactrix.info) and use Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, Linked-In, and a whole slew of others… include DIGG.com… So it makes sense to me stay connected on the go. I follow tech news… and have a slew of sites I review all the time. Aside from that… I can watch video better… a la iTunes ( I have a huge libary of movies in my libary on my Mac Mini connected to my plasma TV and will be able to view them on the iPad). That is why it is crucial for me to get the 3G capability… especially since it is so cheap… and I don’t have to lock into a committment.

Will let you know Scott how it works out. I am looking forward to the occasional e-book as well (or is that iBook… not to be confused with my vintage G3 PPC processor based [art deco] clamshell laptop produced in 2001… which is 10 years old… and I use all the time).

Stay tuned for my Personal WordPress iPad review… LOL.
